When I was a kid, I was taken in by many of the weird and wonderful things that you could send away for by mail order. Sea Monkeys was one of them. I think they suckered a lot of kids. The idea that you could have an instant pet family by just adding water was compelling. In reality, they were brine shrimp, or something, that you needed a microscope to see.
That didn't stop me from ordering other strange things, like self-assembly radios that ran on potato-power, magic tricks, or even avian incubators (I successfully hatched three chickens and a quail).
Unlike today, mail order took a long time, then, so there was plenty of anticipation built up by the time the item arrived. Perhaps, this shielded us from the inevitable disappointment, because the waiting and pining for what we imagined we'd get was more exciting than what actually came. It let our imaginations run wild - something that is rare in today's "instant gratification" economy.
So, in the spirit of "Sea Monkeys", I'd like to propose a Writing Jam in which you try to imagine the most far-fetched mail-order item, ever.
First of all - what is it? What's it like to fantasise about? And, ultimately, what is it that arrives?
